6th Sunday after Epiphany

Jesus and the Pharisees discuss the ritual of hand washing in the Jewish culture and faith.  Why was hand washing so important?  Was it just for hygiene purposes?  Jesus counteracts the tradition of the religious elders by stating that uncleanness and defilement are matters of intention and heart, not the violation of cultic rituals and formalities.  How do you continue to uphold human traditions versus living out the commandments of God in your daily life?  How do you disagree constructively with people who have different sources of authority?  Jesus tells us that the only thing that really matters is what we put out into the world.
