We are in the third week of a six-week series called Reversal and Restoration. We continue to explore how the promises of God are fulfilled in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus through the lens of the Gospel of Luke. This episode explores the day in the church year known as Transfiguration Sunday. This is the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season. The Big Question in today’s scripture concerns Jesus’ identity. Exactly who is Jesus? It’s a question that all of us have at one point or more in our lives. Do we really understand who Jesus is and what it means to be a disciple? The disciples continue to struggle with comprehending Jesus’ new view of the world in addition to his identity and mission. By not understanding Jesus, they struggle with understanding their own call to discipleship. How do you struggle in this way, too?
This series continues to explore how the promises of God are fulfilled in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus through the lens of the Gospel of Luke. Yet those promises are not always what we expect or think that we need. Instead, Jesus’ mission and ministry brings with it controversy, reversal, and confusion. Ultimately, his mission prepares his disciples including us to become apostles sharing the Good News of love and grace to ALL people in both word and deed.
