In today’s scripture reading, Jesus encounters a man who wants to know the answer to the ultimate question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” The man doesn’t like Jesus’ answer. The call to discipleship is not just another obligation because it involves a cost. The fishermen leave their boat and nets, the tax collector leaves his table, and even Peter leaves his false conceptions and perspectives about the Messiah. The kingdom of God topples our cherished priorities and demands of his disciples new priorities, obligations, and allegiances.
