15th Sunday after Pentecost

Passage: 2 Kings 20:12-19
Service Type:

"King Hezekiah was a well-intentioned, righteous man and the ruler of Judah.  During his reign, he enacted reforms to preserve the temple worship in Jerusalem and helped people discover the beauty and wonder of God's laws."  But Hezekiah gave the Babylonian prince an extended tour of Jerusalem's wealth and resources.  He educated the enemy.  Isaiah warned him.  Hezekiah replied, "Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?"  This is our thought process too.  We think everything is okay so we don't pass along the sacred words, the language of God to future generations.  When our focus becomes primarily on our own security and about us, then complacency and inaction take over.  For instance, in the Great Depression, religion was failing to articulate a meaningful message to a society immersed in poverty and despair.  How are we using sacred words today?
