Light to the Nations
Today’s scripture comes from what is known as Second Isaiah and describes the suffering servant, which Christians associate with Jesus. But Isaiah’s prophetic words extend farther than just that Jesus was born and died and was resurrected for your particular sins. God’s promise is not just a promise of redemption for Israel and for us, because it is more than that. It is a promise of redemption for renewed mission. Throughout God’s story, God calls and sends particular people. The ultimate call and send story is the incarnation of Jesus. Jesus is called and sent to bring people the knowledge of God as well as the peace, hope, and love of God to the ends of the earth. Jesus is born in the flesh to be a light to the nations. God also calls us and has given us an identity to be a light to the nation through the presence of Jesus.
