Asking members of the congregation to take turns bringing in homemade or purchased baked goods. (Except for Shayne Wilfer – she is obligated to bring in her almond yumminess). If you can assist, please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex or contact Betty Wright at basslakewrights@gmail.com.
NEW TIME! NEW DAY! Let’s Gather Adult Bible Study coming soon! The Christian Ed team is excited to share we have a new Adult Bible Study opportunity coming in October. It will be Wednesdays—October 9, 16 and 23 at 5:30 PM. Snacks will be provided! Please bring a beverage of your choice. (Really? Our choice? This could end up being even more interesting) We’re bringing a variety of facilitators to lead the discussion as we explore scripture together. Mark your calendars! Let’s Gather! Questions? Please reach out to Pastor Grant, Rachel Strong or Shayne Wilfer.
ENDOWMENT GRANTS – Help the Endowment Team use our Endowment Fund as effectively as possible to enhance the mission outreach of Prince of Peace. As the fund’s custodian, the team is looking for ways to help the church ministry in the community. If you would like to offer a suggestion to the Endowment Team or financially contribute, get a request form from the narthex, the church office or the website. A donation of any amount will help immensely and be much appreciated. Recently our endowment made a contribution of $500 to Worship in the Wild and $250 to Northwoods Share.
BLESSING OF THE PETS – On October 13, we will bless our pets during worship. You are invited, at your discretion, to bring your pet into the sanctuary for a blessing. You may also bring a picture or a pet toy instead of your pet. Pastor Grant will be available for 30 minutes after worship to offer an outdoor blessing as an alternative. Feel free to bring your pet pictures prior to October 13th. We will have a “Pet Board” for pictures of all of your beasts. Even better – the Wrights have volunteered to bring snacks for our furry friends. Finally – if you would like – please bring pet food (smaller bags and/or cans) or supplies for us to donate to the Food Pantry for people who are struggling to take care of their pets.
TRUNK OR TREAT – Do you miss the days when little goblins and ghouls came knocking on your door? Have we got the opportunity for you! We will be hosting a trunk or treat at Prince of Peace on Halloween from 4-6PM on October 31. Come spread Halloween fun to community children. You can host your own car or combine with other members. Decorate your car (or not) and dress in costume (or not) but bring about 200 treats to give out to community children. Sign up in the Narthex! Contact Rachel Strong with any questions. It is going to be SPOOK-tacular! Also on hand – hot apple cider and a campfire!
FUN FACT – I thought about leaving the bulletin at six pages – but instead you’re going to get eight pages – with two pages devoted to fun facts. Pastor Grant is off doing wonderful spiritual things. He sent me an email advising that Oct 3rd is Saint Francis’ Transitus Day. You know me by now – had to go find out what a Transitus Day is.
We already had Fun Facts about St. Francis last year. And we’ve learned about St.Clare of Assisi. So what IS a Transitus Day?
Transitus is the annual celebration by Franciscans throughout the world of the passing of St. Francis from this life to life with God. It is celebrated the night of October 3, the eve of his feast day. The word “transitus” comes from the Latin, meaning passage or crossing.
There is no one ritual for Transitus, and therefore many expressions have developed for this liturgy. Certain prayers or writings of St. Francis and accounts from his early biographers are common. One of them, “The Life of St. Francis” by Thomas of Celano, recalls how when Francis was dying, he asked that the washing of the feet from Gospel of John be read. This Scriptural passing is often included in the Transitus. Since Francis spoke of dying as embracing Sister Death, the ritual is solemn but not sad and inspires the participants to richly live the Gospel until the end of their days.
Not only that – but Saint Francis wrote a song about it! Want to hear it – here it goes …
Canticle of the Sun, also called Laudes Creaturarum (“Canticle of the Creatures”), is a poem by Saint Francis himself. He praises God and thanks Him for His creatures, who share this existence with us. Saint Francis was a well-known friend of nature, through which he understood God’s grace and creative power.
The last stanzas are said to have been added by Brothers Leo and Angelo, his two trusty human companions, who sung it for the first time in his deathbed, in a small cottage built to him by Saint Clare and the Sisters who would follow him.
[When I copied it over – it all truncated into one huge paragraph – you’ll have to read it as a blob here. In the bulletin – at church – it is nicely formatted]
“Most High, all powerful, good Lord, Yours are the praises, the glory, the honour, and all blessing. To You alone, Most High, do they belong, and no man is worthy to mention Your name. Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, who brings the day; and you give light through him. And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendour! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Wind, and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather through which you give sustenance to Your creatures. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water, which is very useful and humble and precious and chaste. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Mother Earth, who sustains us and governs us and who produces varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs. Praised be You, my Lord, through those who give pardon for Your love, and bear infirmity and tribulation. Blessed are those who endure in peace for by You, Most High, they shall be crowned. Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whom no living man can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin. Blessed are those who will find Your most holy will, for the second death shall do them no harm. Praise and bless my Lord, and give Him thanks and serve Him with great humility.”
I listened to this today – in Latin – it is deeply moving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAAoayeSoPw
“Remember when you leave this earth,
you can take with you nothing that you have received – only what you have given.”
-St. Francis of Assisi
Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen
NOTES FROM Ann – I received a bunch of pictures. Hopefully I have added enough of them in. I appreciate the adventures near and far that everyone partakes in. You really do not have to spend a lot of money or travel great distances to have an adventure. Especially here in the Northwoods.
Speaking of adventures, we returned safely from our Colorado adventure. The dogs weren’t entirely happy with us being gone. We are trying to make it up to them with walks etc. Milo, our yellow lab, is now 7 months old. He is thirsty for knowledge. If we don’t challenge him – he will sit and bark at us. Interacting with the Lab is a must! I used to have a Search and Rescue German Shepherd. And since Milo has a really good nose, I started him on puppy tracks. A puppy track is where he is allowed to see the person who he is going to find – run away from him.
The first track we started in the driveway. Burt ran around the house towards the lake. Once he got around the house – he went down the path towards the lake and stepped off the path to hide behind a tree.
Meanwhile – back in the driveway – Milo whined and pulled at his leash to go after Burt. As soon as Burt was out of sight – Milo turned to me and sat – waiting for his command of “Go Find”. I gave the scent article to Milo – told him to “Go Find” and I dropped the leash. Milo took off like a shot! Running full speed around the house, down the path and … right past Burt down to the lake. I was lagging behind and made it around the house right about the time Milo made it to the lake. I saw Burt behind a tree, but made no indication towards him. I called Milo back to get him back on the scent. Milo self corrected and found Burt. He was praised and received a lot of “good boys”! Burt and I discussed the track and set up another one. Burt said Milo was on his track practically footstep by footstep. When the wind picked up and swirled away from him – Milo got off track. Burt could see that Milo realized that he had lost the scent and Milo worked his way back to find him.
We ran another track. This time when Burt hid, Burt didn’t see there were three deer in the woods behind him. Once again – Milo was on track – but he saw the deer and went after them. I called Milo back and surprisingly his recall was really good and he got back on track right away and found Burt. We ended up doing two more tracks, but I’m not going to detail those out.
Isn’t that kind of how it goes though – with our relationship with God?
When we can “see” Him we get all excited? When He is out of sight – we look for others to help us find Him. And sometimes we need help along the way to stay focused on Him or get distracted before we get back on track?
Or maybe it was a stretch to make the analogy. Regardless, I wish you happy puppy tracks during your personal walk with God!
The Wrights gave me pictures for this week. I’m going to have to use them next week due to a technical issue.
My pictures got out of sync. The first and last picture is from Sue Waggoner. She said, “I am sharing 2 pictures of a very special time for us this summer: the first is our grandson who lives in Chicago, who proposed to his girlfriend at their favorite place—the Chicago lakeshore! The whole family (grandmas, grandpas, moms, dads and siblings surprised them at their apartment to celebrate their engagement! One came from out east, one came from out west!).” Family definitely is a key theme for best pictures of the summer.
The next picture is one Jon Cook took along his lakeshore. Jon said, “While I was attempting to see if I could get a picture of a noisy bunch of gulls feeding at the sandbar across the lake, I just happened to have a deer walk into the picture. ”
Then there are four pictures from the Strongs. Pictures of Assateague Island and the Appalachian Trail crossing the James River. They went to a place I’ve always wanted to go – more specifically – Chincoteague Islands – home of Misty – the pony. Only fans of Marguerite Henry will understand.
Still time to share pictures!
