PET BLESSING – is scheduled for Oct 4 – bring your scaley, furry, fluffy, feathered friends to be blessed by Pastor Grant. We will paws before worship to bestow good tidings on our pets.

Presenter Steve Spilde will be leading the conversation. The enneagram is a powerful tool for understanding ourselves and others, and refers to nine different personality styles. GET READY – Prince of Peace will be hosting “Leaving a Legacy of Faith” for churches in our conference on Thu, Oct 15 from 11:30a to 1:30p. More information to follow.
GOD’S WORK – OUR HANDS! Celebrating all that they do on Sep 13! Look for the banner we created last year with our handprints. We are excited about our outreach project that involves all of the congregation. We are going to collect Socks and Cuddly Teddy Bears!! Adult and Youth socks will be distributed to the homeless shelters in the Northwoods and the Teddy Bears will be given to the “Foster Closet” for foster children when they are placed and to the Eagle River Fire and Police Departments for comfort for children on calls that affect them.
There will be a laundry bin placed at the base of the Baptismal Font to accept donations to ” The Mountain of Socks ” given with love Also on Sunday Sep 13 – be ready for the “Socks and Teddy Bear Blessing” followed by treats in the Fellowship Hall and don’t forget to wear your God’s Work T-Shirts. (We have some still available in the Front Office 2 – Small, 2 – Medium, 2 L and 2 2XL)

OCTOBER DIRECTORY RELEASE – A new directory will be printed and available on Oct 1. Yep – right before Ann is gone for almost the entire month. At least that is the plan – recently her travel plans haven’t quite happened. If you have an updated address, new email, changed your phone number, please let the front office know.
FUN FACT – I’ve started running across words that I haven’t paid attention to in the past. I’m sure most of them are familiar to you – but in case they are not – here they are – along with their definitions and my interpretations.
Paraclete (/ˈpærəkliːt/; Greek: παράκλητος, romanized: paráklētos) is a Christian biblical term occurring five times in the Johannine texts of the New Testament. In Christian theology, the word commonly refers to the Holy Spirit and is translated as ‘advocate’, ‘counsellor’ or ‘helper’. I had also read that it meant ‘walks beside’. When we got Leinie – I wanted to name him Cletus – because he would be walking beside us. Obviously didn’t win that discussion.
Pentateuch – The first part of the Bible is called the Torah in Hebrew or the Pentateuch in Greek, comprising the first five books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Which takes me to a childhood memory of my Uncle John. He would make Penuche (/pəˈnutʃi/) a fudge-like candy made from brown sugar, butter, and milk, using no flavorings except for vanilla. I’m not sure if I liked the candy more or if I liked saying the word more. I may have to make some and bring it into church so you can experience it too.
Those were words I came by organically. I didn’t seek them out – they fell into my lap. To fill up the rest of this page – I did seek additional unusual words to share.
Nephilim: This mysterious word appears in Genesis 6:4 and refers to a group of beings who are described as the offspring of the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men.” The exact identity of the Nephilim is a subject of debate among scholars, with interpretations ranging from fallen angels to giants.
Selah: Found primarily in the Psalms, the word Selah is a musical notation that likely indicated a pause or a musical interlude in the reading or chanting of the text. Its precise meaning remains uncertain, but it is thought to have served a liturgical or contemplative purpose in the worship practices of ancient Israel. I think we covered this one previously when we did a Fun Fact about the Psalms. It is a pretty word – it is musical when you say it.
There were other words to consider – however, those are somewhat commonly used – behemoth, leviathan, and firmament. Cherubim was mentioned. I always picture a sweet, little cherub as we know it today – BUT – a cherubim are associated with guarding sacred spaces and symbolize the presence of God. That is a mighty presence indeed. I think we all need a cherubim to guard our sacred spaces. And I noticed the Bishop spoke about Perichoresis (perry-core-ee-sis), in the latest “Northern Lights” which means, “mutual indwelling of the three persons of the Trinity.” Check out what she has to say about it either online or on our bulletin board in the hallway.
NOTES FROM ANN – the pictures this week are from our Annual Golf Outing – I did not receive the scores – so I don’t know who walked away with bragging rights. My desk area always looks like a hot mess. I am mostly okay with it. It makes sense to me and I can find stuff. Part of the reason why it is a hot mess is because whenever I find something that resounds with me – I stick it on the wall. So I have a whole hodgepodge of sayings, verses, and pictures stuck all around my work area. Today, I took some time to stop and steep myself in all of it. Re-reading what was on the walls – not letting the ‘mess’ stress me out. Rather – remembering when and why I saved those particular bits.
Reminding myself this works both ways. What I may consider in a person to be a ‘mess’ may very well be the most important part of them. I need to see the message – not the mess.
