FUN FACT: At first – it doesn’t sound very appealing – the “Imposition of Ashes”. (see picture below)

When you drill down to the Lutheran perspective – there are three reasons why Lutherans go to church to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday.

First, the ashes remind people of their sinfulness.
Second, the ashes remind people of their mortality.
Third, the ashes remind people that they have been redeemed.

What a gift we have been given!

NOTE FROM ANN – What a week. I had so … so many screw ups this week – it went beyond funny. Last night at Ash Wednesday’s service – I felt as though the sermon had been written especially for me. If you weren’t able to make it – please take a moment to watch the service on YouTube. It wasn’t the service that Pastor Grant had planned (plans changed due to weather and illness) – but it was the worship service I definitely needed.

This past Tuesday when I came to work – I had balance on my mind. (Which was NOT achieved this week). There is so much going on in the world. We are bombarded with so many things that are wrong or tragic. I want to fix it all. The reality is – I don’t have the bandwidth, time, energy, or dollars to do it. What can I do? I can manage (ha) the chaos in front of me. I can help the person next to me, whether they be a stranger or a friend. I can take an active approach in my community. By starting somewhere, I can encourage change, make a change, be a change.

I think about the Weekend Backpack Program. There may be kids who accept a bag with their left hand and toss it away with their right hand. There may be other kids who bring it home with a joyful heart to share with their family – taking pride in alleviating some of the worry in their parents faces. Either one of those kids may be the one who remembers the support and kindness and becomes a mover and shaker in our world to make an even bigger difference. We just don’t know.

Find your balance. Make your peace. Embrace what you can do and let go of the rest.

Pictures – the picture at the top of the page is our restored totem living it up in the snow. The next picture is from Aspirus Hospital in Woodruff. Powerful stuff. And finally – the picture that goes with the fun fact for this week.
