Here is some history about the two teams and the game itself. Plus – in the Narthex is a full-on Super Fan/Super Bowl trivia quiz – only 20 copies. It is for the true diehard football fan. (I didn’t take the quiz – I’m pretty sure I would fail)

Some history about the Kansas City Chiefs:

In 1959, Lamar Hunt began discussions with other businessmen to establish a professional football league that would rival the National Football League. Hunt’s desire to secure a football team was heightened after watching the 1958 NFL Championship Game between the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts. After unsuccessful attempts to purchase and relocate the NFL’s Chicago Cardinals to his hometown of Dallas, Texas, Hunt went to the NFL and asked to create an expansion franchise in Dallas. The NFL turned him down, so Hunt then established the American Football League and started his own team, the Dallas Texans, to begin play in 1960.

Hunt agreed to relocate the franchise to Kansas City on May 22, 1963, and on May 26, the team was renamed the Kansas City Chiefs. Hunt and head coach Hank Stram initially planned to retain the Texans name, but a fan contest determined the new “Chiefs” name in honor of Mayor Bartle’s nickname that he acquired in his professional role as Scout Executive of the St. Joseph and Kansas City Boy Scout Councils, and founder of the Scouting Society, the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Despite the historical use of Native American features, it has been acknowledged that the team’s naming was not a direct reference to Native Americans but only to Bartle’s nickname “Chief”.

If someone were to get hurt, the Chiefs wouldn’t have to turn to their medical staff, they could turn to the offensive line. Lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif finished his medical degree while playing for the team and will become the first medical doctor to play in the NFL and of course, the Super Bowl.

Some history about the Philadelphia Eagles:

The Philadelphia Eagles’ first coach was Greasy Neale! Neale was born on November 5, 1891, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Although writers eventually assumed that Neale got his nickname, “Greasy”, from his elusiveness on the football field, it actually arose during his youth, from a name-calling joust with a friend.

Greasy was a baseball player to start and later played football – becoming a coach while he was still playing football.

The Eagles were the only team to ever beat Vince Lombardi’s Packers in the playoffs. The Packers only suffered one playoff loss during Lombardi’s legendary, nine-year tenure: In the 1960 NFL Championship Game, the Eagles prevailed over the Packers at Franklin Field by a final score of 17-13.

In 2017, the city of Philadelphia tried greasing streetlight poles to prevent Eagle fans from celebrating on them. It didn’t stop Eagle fans however. There are many pictures of Eagle fans climbing the greased streetlights.

Two Star Wars films contain hidden Eagles references. Lucasfilm sound engineer David Acord loves his Philadelphia Eagles. When he was tasked with devising a language for the reptile-like alien Teedo in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Acord had the beast say “Celek” and “Fletcher” onscreen. This was a reference to Eagles tight end Brent Celek and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. For Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Acord passed off an Esperanto translation of “Fly, Eagles Fly” as a mystical Jedha City chant.

Things the teams have in common:

Both teams were coached by Dick Vermeil and Andy Reid!

What does football have to do with being a Lutheran? Not much. I did find a couple of articles about football and religion, but nothing that resounded with me enough to share it. Have a great Sunday!

FYI – I love pizza. I like football. I prefer college ball over pro-football. But – I do like watching a good football game regardless. I’ll go back to our regularly scheduled Ann-ouncements next week.
