FUN FACTS – 2025 ELCA Churchwide Assembly is Jul 28–Aug. 2 in Phoenix, AZ. Our pulpit supply leaders Adam Matyska and Matthew Johnson will be in attendance.

The ELCA Churchwide Assembly, the primary decision-making body of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is a process of communal spiritual discernment. Over the course of the assembly, voting members:

Hear reports and review the work of churchwide officers, leaders and units.
Receive and consider proposals from synod assemblies.
Elect officers, board members and other leaders as specified by the constitution or
Establish ELCA churchwide policy.
Worship together.
Adopt a budget.
Conduct other business related to the ELCA churchwide organization bylaws. (Voting on a new Bishop over the entire ELCA)
For the Life of the World

The first Council of Nicaea was convened 1,700 years ago, beginning the process of setting forth Christian convictions in what we know today as the Nicene Creed. The creed proclaims the life-giving truth of the triune God and our steadfast faith in Jesus Christ “for … the life of the world to come.” These convictions continue to live & breathe in word & sacrament.

Early in her tenure, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton set forth her own convictions to guide the members of the ELCA in understanding our unique identity:

We are church.
We are Lutheran.
We are church together.
We are church for the sake of the world.
We are church for the sake of the world — for the abundant life promised by God and fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for all creation.

We recognize the wisdom of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who said, “The church is the church only when it exists for others.” Our constitution’s “Statement of Purpose” boldly proclaims this commitment to be a people “called and sent to bear witness to God’s creative, redeeming, and sanctifying activity in the world.”

Rooted in the ancient creeds, we are called to live boldly in service to a world longing for healing, justice and hope. We will continue to faithfully pursue God’s mission of reconciliation for the life of the world.

Land Acknowledgment – The 2025 Churchwide Assembly will be held on the original and ancestral homelands of the Hohokam, O’odham, and Piipaash peoples. We give thanks for their presence on the land since time immemorial. We also wish to recognize and honor all our Indigenous siblings who have and continue to call the land their home. When we gather for the Churchwide Assembly in 2025, let us remember the Indigenous peoples and tribal nations who were the first to love, pray, grow, celebrate, cry, drum, dance and sing upon the lands where we will be assembled.

BONUS FUN FACT – On July 28, the National Park Service celebrates Buffalo Soldiers Day to commemorate the formation of the first regular Army regiments comprised of African American soldiers in 1866. The Buffalo Soldiers had a unique role in the early management and stewardship of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

From 1861 to 1865, the American union was broken as brother fought brother in a Civil War that remains a defining moment in our nation’s history. In 1866, the Buffalo Soldiers were established by Congress to help the nation rebuild in the aftermath of the war and to patrol areas of the West. Made up of six all-African American army regiments, the Buffalo Soldiers were tasked with managing select western national parks before the National Park Service was officially established. The Soldiers’ work helped shape the national park system, and created a foundation for early park management and stewardship. In 1903, Captain Charles Young and the 9th Cavalry Regiment (comprised of African American soldiers) were assigned to Sequoia and General Grant (now Kings Canyon) National Parks. Captain Young was the first African American to serve as a National Park Service superintendent. Captain Young and the Buffalo Soldiers made significant contributions to the parks, including constructing road and trails that are still in use today. What makes this even more interesting is Jul 28 is also World Nature Conservation Day.

NOTES FROM ANN – I had done some deep thinking this morning and was going to share it – BUT – right before I was wrapping things up for the day – I received a phone call that could have CHANGED MY LIFE! Publisher’s Clearing House was trying to get in touch with me! Read the following for most of the details.

“Publisher’s Clearing House” just called me!

Just wasted some scammer’s time. Only made it to 15 minutes before I had to stop.

Did you know?

I just won $15 MILLION dollars and an annuity where I would get paid $7000 a WEEK and so would my beneficiaries (I could designate up to three) AND a 2025 Ford Bronco!!!!!

Dude didn’t even flinch when I said I was a retired police officer.
In order to claim my prize – I had to go to Dollar General with him on the line.

Nuts. Dog gone it – I called him from a landline.

Told him I used to investigate idiots like him and he hung up on me.

How rude!

It was the best tho – Russian type accent trying to do a Minnesota accent was Mr. Albert Johnson. And David Myers – my initial contact was trying to do a southern accent.

I really should have recorded it.

The initial phone call was from a private line.

The number I was to call was 516-302-4755.

I was called by David Myers. And was instructed to contact Albert Johnson, the General Manager at extension 105.

I was asked what I was going to do with the money because they did not want me to use it for nefarious purposes – like human trafficking or drugs. I told them I was going to donate most of it to charities.

And they wanted to know if I wanted my winnings publicized across all 52 states! I even asked, “All 52?” Well then heck yeah! I want that kind of publicity.

And I wasn’t to worry about whether or not this was a valid call because it was being recorded to give to the Better Business Bureau.

My pkg #771 414 7000 US WINNER
My ticket #27 PCH

Feel free to contact Mr. Albert Johnson and waste his time.

And please, please, please if you EVER get a phone call like this and/or letters and/or emails and/or texts – PLEASE VERIFY – call me, call your local police department. You are NOT a bother. They would much rather field a phone call from you than have to do a report where you lost money.

Not today Satan, not today.
