FUN FACTS – Looked into the titles and the “chain of command” for the ELCA. My military side popped out for this week’s Fun Fact! The following are the titles that may be seen in Protestant type churches: Preacher, Pastor, Minister, Priest, Reverand, Elder, Deacon, Priestess, Bishop, Archbishop

ELCA Chain of Command:
Pastor – heads up their church and reports to the Synod.
Synod bishop – Each synod elects a bishop to oversee the administration of the synod and its staff.
Synod bishops and the Conference of Bishops In addition to synodical responsibilities, the 65 synod bishops join the elected ELCA Presiding Bishop and Secretary to form the Conference of Bishops. This 67-member group gathers at least twice each year for worship and study, mutual sharing and to conduct business. While primarily advisory, the role of the Conference of Bishops is significant within the life of this church. The conference elects its own officers, has standing committees and a representative to each ELCA churchwide unit and separately incorporated ministry.

The Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is both the board of directors of a Minnesota nonprofit corporation and the interim legislative authority of the churchwide organization, one of the three “expressions” of a denomination with deep roots in the U.S. In fulfilling its dual constitutional roles, the Church Council exercises fiduciary, strategic, and generative responsibilities to govern the ELCA churchwide organization.

The voting members of the Church Council are the four officers, the chair of the Conference of Bishops and 32–45 individuals elected by the Churchwide Assembly. There also are nine liaison synod bishops, one from each region, who serve as advisory members with voice but not vote.
The Church Council meets together at least twice a year and communicates by other means when necessary.
Along with the shared leadership of congregations, synods and the churchwide organization, there are four elected churchwide officers who bring their enthusiastic faith and unique skills to their service on behalf of this church and its mission.
ELCA churchwide officers are elected to serve six-year terms through the actions of the Churchwide Assembly or the Church Council (Treasurer). The current officers are: Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton; Vice President Imran Siddiqui; Secretary Sue E. Rothmeyer; Treasurer Lori Fedyk

Ministers of Word and Sacrament. Pastors, serve with active, courageous faith to offer the hope of the sacraments and to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ in congregations and other ministry settings.

Ministers of Word and Service. Deacons serve in congregations and other ministries of the ELCA, including family ministries, youth, administration, volunteer ministry, social services, music or parish nursing. Deacons connect the church with the needs of the world and work to equip others to lead a living, active and caring Christian life.

And now you know!

NOTES FROM ANN: Flat Luther has been out and about. Check out the windows of the Fellowship Hall for his latest adventures.

We received a phone call from the daughter of Earl Pankow. Earl and his wife Iantha Louise (not sure which name she went by) used to come to Prince of Peace. They were not members, but had enjoyed their time here. Iantha passed away in 2022. Earl has moved into Milestone in Eagle River. His room number is 116. His daughter said he would really like to have visitors. Preferably male as it sounds like he is outnumbered at Milestone. He would love to talk about fishing, hunting and/or the history of the area. He used to live on Carpenter Lake. His daughter said just stop on by if you can. He will either be in his room or in the dining room.

On to our pictures! We had a couple of “twinning” incidents this past Sunday. (And wow – Pastor’s sermon really hit home with me). Barb Zima and Joyce Leander twinned with their floral theme. And Mike Bishop and Jack Palmer decided to teal it up.

While I was sitting down by the river – I saw four goose/geese families float on by AND a traffic stop on the river!!! Brought a smile to my face. I “think” the boat was checked out due to the platform. Not entirely sure because I couldn’t hear the whole conversation.

My random thought this week has to do with the wind and faith. This past week I think I have “seen” the wind more than I ever have since moving here. The wind was almost constant back at the farm.

This morning as I took the dogs out – in the distance I could hear the wind coming. The tops of the trees were still and once the wind arrived – the leaves were dancing and the boughs were swaying. I couldn’t “see” the wind but I could see the impact. Isn’t that how it goes with faith? You don’t really “see” it but you can feel the impact. There is a whole scientific explanation for wind – what causes it and what impacts it. Not so much on the faith side. (tho I did find a neat article about science and faith – https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4313436/). But YOU know and I know – once you believe – once you have faith – you can see it in action. You might not be able to explain, but you can feel it – as surely as you can feel the wind on your face.

My hope for you this week are many windy days!

And I would love to hear about your stories of when faith made leaves dance and boughs sway.
