SYNOD ASSEMBLY REFLECTIONS FROM RUTH RODDA & LISA KOHLMAN

Thank you Prince of Peace congregation for the opportunity to attend the 2026 ELGA Northern Great Lakes Synod assembly. This was the first time I participated in one of the assemblies and it was a very positive and uplifting day. The assembly theme “Seed Sowers” focused on the scripture passage from I Corinthians 3:6, I planted, Apollos watered, and God gave the growth.” Each presenter throughout the day wove this theme into their reports reminding us that while each of us, as disciples of Christ, can sow seeds and water those seeds in many ways, it is ultimately Christ who will provide the growth: in HIS time, not our time. This was a wonderful reminder to keep watering and watch what God can do. Bishop Katherine Finnegan gave a very comprehensive report including all the areas of growth throughout the synod. This past year saw growth not only faith formation and service but also financially. The assembly was also a time for celebrating Congregation anniversaries, Pastor ordination anniversaries and retirements.

One area that really impacted me was the report from Ms. Alison Richards the ELGA representative. She reviewed all the different ways the church reaches out, doing mission work, not only in our own communities but nationally and globally. One example is Lutheran Disaster Relief who is still actively working in Lahaina, Maui Hawaii with rebuilding after the 2023 fire. We also learned that the ELGA Youth Gathering 2027 will be held in Minneapolis MN. Finally, we were inspired by a recorded message from The Rev Yehiel Curry, Presiding Bishop of the ELGA. One quote I jotted down left me with something to reflect on, pray about, and consider was this “As we move forward, do we seek new ways to do church or continue down the same path.” – Ruth Rodda

I was impressed with the technology of being able to put together a zoom meeting for all the conferences in our Synod. Our conference was clearly the one having the most fun!!

I was also impressed with the generous giving of the congregations in our Synod to have $33,000 of surplus over budget especially with the congregations getting smaller.

I didn’t realize all the different organizations that the Synod supports such as World Hunger, Disaster relief, Lutheran Social Services etc

I loved the casual setting for the worship service & the lunch was amazing. Everyone was very welcoming & friendly. – Lisa Kohlman

FUN FACT – You are awesome!

NOTES FROM ANN – Check out the pictures that Dave Tipple sent me. Dave and Denis Del Ponte have been working diligently to switch over our sanctuary lights from the old bulbs to LED bulbs. Which will save the church time and money in the upcoming years. There was a conversion kit needed, but it didn’t quite do the trick. So they created a doohickey to to attach to the thingamabob to make it all work. We are continually thankful the talent at Prince of Peace.

Oh – and we were able to sneak back into church on Thursday.

A couple of weeks I mentioned our new family member. He is now 14 weeks old and he is keeping us on our toes. Here is a picture of Leinie (beer, Marines, Wisconsin). He is going to be a beast.

A long-time friend reached out to me this past week with a great travel opportunity. It is a chance to do something I’ve wanted to do – something I put on a lifetime to-do list about 20 years ago. I was concerned about cost and time. Burt gave it an immediate thumbs-up and said “Go for it”. I was going to say ‘no’ and then as I was leaving home to go somewhere, the thought hit me, “If not now – when?” I called my friend back and said “I’m in”. More on this adventure later.

Your question for this week is – “If not now – when?”
