INTERESTING FACTS: I have recited the Apostle’s Creed many times. I tend to be too literal. I used to get hung up on saying “holy catholic church” until I realized the word itself means “including a wide variety of things; all-embracing:”. Which is lovely. “The holy all-embracing church” does sound better to me. The next line has always thrown me for a loop tho – because I’m saying ‘I believe’ in – “the communion of saints”.

I was mulling it over this week. The image brought to my mind is a bunch of old holy guys sitting at a round table – passing communion wafers and wine to one another. I thought – I definitely can believe this happened/happens. Maybe Matthew, Mark, Luke and John make it a habit in heaven? I wasn’t sure why I should believe in it – what is the relevance?

[Hopefully someone else has had questions about this as well]

Poor Pastor Grant. I brought it up to him and he looked at me with a look of, “Are you serious right now?” For him, that perspective never crossed his mind. It is more about fellowship of those who believe and those believers who have died. The following is a good Christian, though not necessarily a Lutheran description of what “Communion of Saints” is all about.

“All saints, that are united to Jesus Christ their Head, by his Spirit, and by faith, have fellowship with him in his graces, sufferings, death, resurrection, and glory: and, being united to one another in love, they have communion in each other’s gifts and graces, and are obligated to the performance of such duties, public and private, as do conduce to their mutual good, both in the inward and outward man.”

“The communion of the saints is carried out through the assembling of the saints. This is the Church assembly, where, we have unity with God, teach God’s Word in truth, and look out for the needs and interests of each other.”

[Note: an apology to Pastor Roberts who led my confirmation class too many years ago.]

NOTES FROM ANN – The picture at the top is a piece of work created by Cindy Schmidt.

The pictures below illustrate what “communion of saints” is and isn’t. The first picture of our congregation is what it looks like. The second picture of the gentlemen around a table is what is does NOT look like. Sometimes Pastor Grant isn’t paid enough – having to deal with the questions I come up with. Thanksgiving is after this Sunday. My most favorite holiday. It remains my favorite holiday even though my family has experienced a lot of loss around this particular week. I don’t get wrapped up in the loss because of the day – focusing on giving thanks for all sorts of things. Thankful for the time we did have. Thankful for the love and memories. Thankful for family and friends. Thankful for shelter and food. Thankful we have these things to share with others. Thankful for this job and this congregation. And on that note – if anyone wants to join Burt and I for a meal on Thanksgiving – we will be eating around 3pm. Let me know. There will be chaos at our house as we will be babysitting our furry nephew for the holiday.

A friend of mine posted the following today. I’m not sure who wrote it, but I loved it and wanted to share it with all of you.

“Thanksgiving time means the first hard freeze, the first spitting ice to rattles the dry autumn leaves. Early morning frost crystallizes grasses into rods of light. The last bit of bright color is gone from the timbers, and the last walk has been taken without gloves and a scarf. But it also means family. Tradition holds true in keeping a common thread with other times and persons. We remember them with love and appreciation. We cook the same food, continue the same good natured bantering and chaos while the meal is prepared for the table. We set an extra place or two around the table, in our hearts and in our minds, for our loved ones who will join us in spirit.”
